Newcomers to running this tournament, Bob Davis and Sue Dommeyer did an admirable job. It’s a huge undertaking, involving hundreds of man hours, and with the expert help of Lee Calvert, Bea and Duane Enochs, Dede Davis, and the rest of their committee, they managed to pull it off without any major catastrophes!<\/p>\n
The Luau party was a blast! The food was wonderful! With the Hawaiian theme, there were dancers who taught some reluctant, and some eager, participants some hula moves. The Charles and Ada Wurst Award of Merit for Service and Sportsmanship was presented to Duane Enochs, who all agreed was most deserving of this honor. Likewise, Bob Cook, who was awarded the Ray Scott Memorial Trophy.<\/p>\n
Dan Cloppas brought us up to date on the latest USAB news.<\/p>\n
There were some fantastic matches played with the young speedy athletes adding so much to the tournament. Luckily, there were no major injuries this year.<\/p>\n
Some of the most exciting matches were: Jo Lawrence\/Sushil Kumar winning 2 close matches, 21-15, 19-21, 21-18, and 21-15, 16-21, 21-18 to place second in the 35mx. Joy Kitzmiller\/Budy Sumarli were dominant in winning the event. In the 40 mx, Cindy Breise\/Solaiman Jonatan won a barn-burner over Joy\/Marc Padre 14-21, 22-20, 21-18. In the finals of the 45 mx, Matt Fogarty\/Lina Toft d. Terry Lira\/Dudley Chen 13-21, 21-16, 21-19.<\/p>\n
A shocker in the 50MS was Peter Smith pulling the upset of the tournament by defeating Imre Bereknyei 9-21, 21-17, 21-19 in the first round. He then went on to win the event, beating Laszlo Drimusz 10-21, 21-13, 21-18 in the finals.<\/p>\n
It was exciting having Guy Chadwick and Tariq Wadood playing in the tournament, although Imre and Solaiman may not have thought so, as they lost 13-21, 21-12, 21-10 to them in the finals of the 50MD.<\/p>\n
In 55WD, after losing 16-21 in the first game of the finals to Nancy Acuna and Sue Dommeyer, Mary Ann Bowles and Traci Britton came back to win the next two games 21-18, 21-17. In 60MD, Dave Anderson\/Curt Dommeyer won an exciting finals over Bob Cook\/Andy Gouw 14-21, 21-16, 21-19.<\/p>\n
One of the best matches of the tournament was in the 65WD. Sandra Mathieux\/Elsie Wilson d. Jeannine Bohn\/Connie Lee 16-21, 21-19, 25-23! In the 65Mx, Margo Hurst\/Phil Brunner outlasted Sandra\/Dave Ogata 21-18, 21-23, 21-17.<\/p>\n
The 70MD was loaded with good matches. Kamal Chaudhari\/Gene Huffty d. Anatoly Berdichensky\/James Ho 21-23, 21-19, 21-19. Manny Armendariz\/Harry Orr d. Kamal\/Gene 23-21, 22-20. Anatoly\/James d. Djon Lim\/alan Teoh 13-21, 21-18, 21-19.<\/p>\n
In the 70 Mx, Bobbi Skinner\/Alan won a good one over Denise Coates\/Kamal 15-21, 22-20, 21-15. Nan McFarland\/Ernesto Schimmer won a close match over Betty Thompson\/Jim Bosco 16-21, 21-19, 21-17.<\/p>\n
It was very exciting to see that all five of the 80 year events were held! There were even enough players to hold three of the 85 year divisions!<\/p>\n
The big Gold medal winners were: Joyce Jones with 4, and Lee Calvert, Nan McFarland Joy Kitzmiller and Marc Padre with 3 each.<\/p>\n
MS 35 <\/p>\n The 2009 Canadian Badminton Championships were held in Ottawa April 20-25. Co-chairpeople Margaret Thom and Wally Gerus did an excellent job of putting it all together and getting all matches played. Alastair Speirs did a fantastic job as transportation chairman, and Joan Bell did just as good a job on the Socials. Rosemary Addison put in long hours at the Registration Desk.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There were 258 players in all, including 22 Americans who won 12 events.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There were way too many fantastic matches to list them all, but here are some of the best ones that included American players.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 40MD, Garth D’Abreu teamed up with Canadian Derwin Parsons, and unfortunately drew the #1 seeds their first round in a draw of 17 teams. They got knocked into the Consolation, won a tough first round match there 21-18, 18-21, 21-17, and ended up winning the Consolation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In a draw of 16 in the 45MS, Sandro Rossi won all of his matches quite handily to win the event.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 45WD draw of 20 teams, Wendy Carter and Ufilya Davis won a tight match 21-19, 22-20 to reach the semis, but then lost to the team who won the event.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 45Mx draw of 35 teams, Geoff Stensland and Claire Allison came out on top.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 50MD, Solaiman Jonatan was the only American in the event. He teamed with Canadian Christopher Dorey to win a barn-burner in the finals 15-21, 22-20, 21-19!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 50WD, Mari Ikeda and Margaret Chudyk lost a heart breaker to sisters Jennifer Aziz and Sally Dakin 21-15, 29-27.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 55MD, Curt Dommeyer and Michel Martel won a tough 3 game match to reach the semis, then lost in another 3 gamer in the finals to the #1 seeds.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 55Mx, with 21 teams, Joanne Cicrich and Gary Helkay beat Sue Dommeyer and Rob Oldfield 19-21,21-15, 22-20 to reach the finals before losing to the #1 seeds.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 60MD, Curt Dommeyer, the only American in this event, teamed with Ian Bishop to cop the Gold medal.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 60Mx, Curt, again the only american in this event, teamed with Sanne Dryborough to lose a tough match in the finals to the #1 seeds 17-21, 21-19, 21-18.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 70WD, Joyce Jones teamed with her partner of 20 years, Claire Bowyer, to beat a Japanese team in the finals 21-13, 21-8.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 75MD, Jim Bosco and Harry Orr won a marathon 22-20, 21-23, 21-14 to reach the finals, then had another toughy to win the event 17-21, 21-14, 22-20.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the 75Mx, Joyce Jones and Art Brown struggled to beat Jim Duberry and Lee Calvert 21-18, 18-21, 21-11 in the semis, then another struggle to win in the finals 13-21, 23-21, 21-11.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Dick Witte injured himself and had to default all of his matches, so Frank Melvin subbed for him with Jim Bosco in the 80MD. They won the event 16-21, 21-19, 21-13, and I swear Frank jumped 6 feet in the air!It was his first MD title ever! Talk about excited!!!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n With Dick and Lee Calvert out of the picture in the 80Mx, the event was wide open, and Jim Bosco and Betty Thompson won the event with a finals score of 21-15, 19-21, 21-17. There were a multitude of wonderful costumes! About 150 of the attendees participated. The costume winners were: Best woman-Joyce Jones, Seattle (Carmen Miranda); best man-Frank Price, Burnaby (female); best husband & wife team-Bill & Sandy Metcalf, Sas (Ghostbusters) and best group-Rosalind Thompson & Anne Emberly and friends, St. Albert, Alberta (Dalmatians).<\/p>\n The food at the Banquet was marvelous, but I was again disappointed with the music. I guess our music is too outdated now, and we’re just going to have to accept the fact that all we’re going to get now is the loud, frenzied stuff. I guess my disatisfaction shows my age! But, all in all, it was a great tournament. Wonderful to see long time friends!!!
